Sierra Leone – what the newspapers say today

Sierra Leone Telegraph: 9 May 2019:

There are dozens of newspapers printed almost daily in Sierra Leone And with the current heated political climate in the country, created by a war of words between the ruling SLPP and the main opposition APC over constitutionality, parliamentary procedures, justice and the rule of law, corruption, and the economy, the newspapers’ headlines are diverse and paint a mosaic of interesting topics.

These are just some of today’s frontpage headlines:

  1. Who sold the Land to our Krio Brothers and Sister? When did the Krios arrive in Freetown; where did they come from? Freetown is the Capital of Sierra Leone. The Land belongs to US not only Krios.

  2. I praise our brther the president for all the work he is doing. This is what we need in a country like Sierra Leone. He has done a lot, despite the criticsm which our government has been receiving. I do hope critics will soon keep quiet and especially the opposition party.

Can they not work with the government for the development of the country? International communties are praising our brother and a lot of promises some of which have also been received and are being implimented for the good of the people. Please help the gvernment to build the country.

    • Exactly Sir. We Sierra Leoneans should work as one and put aside this bad thing of individuality!
Our Brothere and president of our nation is doing all he can in making a great Sierra Leone. He is a great man!!

    • What do you mean by ‘help the Krio’? Are you ready to help your COUNTRY and stop this individual and personal benefit? You should think far ahead brother.

  3. SUBMITTING PAPERS AND CALLING ON THE PRESIDENT TO INTERVENE OVER LAND ISSUES IS IRRELEVANT. TAXES PAID TO GOVERNMENT FOR SUCH PROPERTIES SHOULD BE PRESENTED IN ORDER TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS.

  4. Nice that you are giving some of us in the diaspora headlines of certain local Newspapers that are not online.

I have read in the Cocorioko about the Krios taking it personal with regards the press release from the Minister of Lands for Land or property owners in the Regent and Masimbo areas of the Western Area to bring their papers for inspection. I read here in The Guardian that the Krios are calling on President Bio to intervene.

As a Non Krio whose family and yours truly have some land and properties in the Regent area, am I not affected by this press Release. Indeed my uncle called for me to send copies of my land and house since I have the original here with me in the Europe? Why are we not taking this fight against the government as concerted effort?

If all land and property owners in the affected areas can speak with one voice, I believe that the government will hear our case. However if the Krios are tribalising it, the government will take advantage of the slip. I am a Themne-Loko, and I know that currently, property and land ownership in Regent area cannot be ascribed to one tribe alone.

My advice to all my neighbours is for us to come together and present our case to the government. We should have our papers. Those who do not have their papers let them go to the people who sold the lands to them and ask for their originals. I am sure that majority of my Krio neighbours have their correct papers. Together we can all ask with one voice instead of with splinter voices.
